Before buying your individual disability policy, get at least three quotes from a licensed agent who has shopped for the lowest rates and provided you with the most generous coverage available. Your agent can also be helpful should you ever need to upgrade your coverage or file a claim, so pick an agent you like and trust. |

Where can I buy disability insurance coverage?
Disability insurance plans can be purchased through group health insurance plans and private insurers.
Disability insurance may also be obtained through public policies including Social Security and some State Disability Insurance (SDI) programs. The state of California does have an SDI program for California residents.
The federal government offers disability insurance plans that cover federal civil servants, members of the armed forces, and coal miners. |
Federal Government Disability Assistance
The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. While these two programs are different in many ways, both are administered by the Social Security Administration and only individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program.
Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are "insured," meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.
Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need.
Social Security pays disability benefits under two programs:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for insured workers, their disabled surviving spouses and children (disabled before age 22) of disabled, retired or deceased workers.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for people with little or no income and resources.
